Lower Rhine wine dream: Antoniazzi's first year convinced!
A winemaker from the city of Geldern on the Lower Rhine carried out his first wine harbow this year. The winemaker, Antoniazzi, can proudly look back on a harvest of over 5000 bottles. For its wines, which are sold in both a small shop and online, customers demand between 15 and 20 euros per bottle. It is particularly noteworthy that the vines come from a certified breeder from the Palatinate and are known as "Piwis". These mushroom -resistant varieties are of great importance for the growing region, especially with regard to the weather -related challenges of agriculture.
The weather was not always optimal in the growth period. A rainy May and June reduced the amount of grapes, but the quality of the wine remained unaffected. Antoniazzi emphasizes the emotional connection that he has for wine production: "Wine is emotion!" For him, the development of a wine vine is a life path that, similar to humans, is gaining in importance over time, even if the yields decrease at some point.
The processing of the grapes
After the harvest of 2024 Antoniazzi started with what he lovingly calls "Magic". Every day he checks the process of wine production, monitors sugar, acid and pH values to ensure a perfect balance in the end product. The must of his white muscaris, which is fermented just a few days after the harvest, is already stored in a tank. Full of anticipation, he talks about the exotic flavors that are expected in the finished wine, especially about a touch of Litschi that is supposed to make the taste unique.
Antoniazzi has the support of his family and friends who share his vision of a wine from the Lower Rhine, which gives him additional motivation. The innovative approach and the successful harvest show that it is quite possible on the Lower Rhine to produce qualitative wines, even if this region is not traditionally known for viticulture. The progress in wine cultivation and the increase in quality of the harvest are enthusiasm that will continue to drive the winemaker and its customers. This step could possibly also encourage other farmers to consider similar activities.
In the current reporting, the WDR emphasizes how important such projects are for regional agriculture. Antoniazzi is determined to further develop his craft and to convince lovers of good wines that the Lower Rhine also has to offer an exciting wine scene.
