Increasing cancer screening in the Höxter district: Men have to follow up!

In the Höxter district, there is a remarkable trend: more and more people are opting for cancer screening. This emerges from a current analysis of the AOK Nordwest, which shows an increase in regulations for early detection. For example, 21.2 percent of men over 45 in 2023 took part in the investigations, an increase of 19.9 percent in the previous year. A positive change can also be observed in women, because 42.5 percent of women aged 20 and over have taken advantage of cancer this year, compared to 41.6 percent in the previous year.

The AOK service manager Matthias Wehmhöner, however, emphasizes that despite the progress, the number of preventive examinations continues to be desired, especially among men. "We therefore urgently appeal to better use the free early detection examinations of the statutory health insurance companies. Prevention is sensible time. Because the opportunity for early diagnostics can save lives," says Wehmhöner. The advantages of cancer detection are clear: the earlier a tumor is recognized, the greater the chances of recovery. Such studies make it possible to identify early stages of cancer in good time.

fears and concerns about participation

An online survey by the Civey opinion research institute, commissioned by the AOK, has revealed that many people prevent many people from participating in cancer. Around 27 percent of those surveyed stated that they fear that the investigations could be uncomfortable or painful. More than half, namely 52 percent, expressed the fear that cancer could actually be found in a cancer screening. These worries could inappropriate the higher use of cancer.

Wahmhöner sees the need to educate about cancer and thus motivate people to deal with this urgent topic. The AOK developed the "pre-BERORG-O-MAT". This online platform answers fundamental questions about the early cancer recognition and provides information about the upcoming studies.

Cancer detection: An overview of the examinations

Cancer detection is not only important for women, but also for men. Men aged 45 and over are entitled to annual studies on the early detection of cancer. These include the examination of the prostate and the outer genital organs as well as the scanning of the regional lymph nodes.

The statutory health insurance companies cover the costs for these preventive examinations, so that financial aspects cannot be cited as an obstacle to the use. It remains to be seen how the AOK can continue to respond to the initial fears of the population and what other measures to raise awareness and information about the advantages of cancer.

The importance of cancer can not be emphasized enough. It is not only a question of health, but also the personal responsibility of each individual to pay attention to risks and to be examined regularly. Clear communication and educational work are crucial to encourage people to use these important offers.
