US government maintains military aid for Israel despite the Gaza crisis

Washington, USA - Washington (dpa)-The US government remains tough: Despite the urgent humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, military aid for Israel is not restricted for the time being. Foreign office spokesman Vedant Patel announced on a journalist request in Washington that the United States does not see Israel violated its own right. The deadline that the United States had set in mid -October to improve the humanitarian situation has expired, but politics remains unchanged.

Patel emphasized that Israel had taken a few steps in the past 30 days to comply with the US demands. Nevertheless, further measures are required to make real progress. The Leahy Act, which prohibits military aid for states with serious human rights violations, is the focus. Critics accuse Israel of violating these requirements, while human rights organizations such as Oxfam and Save the Children publish alarm reports on the catastrophic conditions in the Gaza Strip. According to these reports, 800,000 people suffer from hunger, especially in the north of the area.

aid organizations beat alarm

The aid organizations are calling the United States and other governments to urge Israel to comply with its legal obligations. They warn that the Israeli measures have dramatically deteriorated the humanitarian situation. The allegations against Israel are serious: blockages, air strikes on civilians and a blatant lack of protection for the population in the Gaza Strip. Despite these allegations, US politics remains unchanged, which the critics find scandalous.

The question remains whether the remaining term of office of the US government is sufficient to make tangible progress. Patel left open what this means in concrete terms and emphasized that the United States will continue to observe the situation closely. In the meantime, the change in the White House is imminent: Republican Donald Trump will take over in January after the democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris lost to him. Trump had promised during his election campaign to bring peace to the crisis region, but there were no concrete plans.
