Demolition of the Carl Severing House: Herford loses a piece of history!

in Herford, a dramatic change takes place! An excavator gnawed at the walls of the Carl Severing House, which has shaped the cityscape since 1890. Many Herford know the building, but it is not the birthplace of the famous Prussian Minister of the Interior, but a relic that is now consecrated after decades of vacancy.

The Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe has given the city of Herford to tear down the once listed building. At this historical point, the city plans to build modern residential buildings directly in the shadow of the Jakobikirche. But the condition of the Carl Severing House was catastrophic: the sponge had spread inside, and the damage was so serious that the demolition became unavoidable. The decay has transformed the building into a ruin over the years.

an end of an era

The demolition work is already in full swing, and the city has also had other buildings tear down along Kirchgasse. Even parts of the former Dohm Hotel have to give way, the facade is preserved for reasons of monument protection. The loss of the Carl Severing House marks the end of an era in Herford, while the city moves towards a new, modern future.
