Landkreis Starnberg, Bayern, Deutschland - Where can people in Germany best afford? An exciting evaluation of the Institute of German Economy (IW) took a close look at the regional purchasing power conditions for 2022 and 2023 and brought some surprises to light. At the top are the two Upper Bavarian counties of Starnberg and Miesbach, known for their picturesque "millionaire lakes". This is the highest of the fact that the region makes for a magnet for wealthy.

The purchasing power ranking shows that people in the Starnberg district are at ahead with impressive 35,392 euros per capita. In comparison, the bottom light Offenbach bumbles with only 19,022 euros per inhabitant at the end of the table. The Hochtaunuskreis in Hesse and North Friesland, which shines with the popular island of Sylt, can also be found under the top places. It is striking that many of the best places are occupied by touristy attractive regions, which underpins the statement by the study author Christoph Schröder: "Beautiful landscapes attract money."

But why are there not among the leaders like the district of Munich? The answer lies in the exorbitant cost of living that reduces purchasing power. While counties such as Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge, despite lower incomes, shine through lower living costs, the differences between the regions are clear. The analysis reveals that the housing market is the decisive factor for purchasing power. If the housing costs are deducted, the differences between the regions are much lower.

At the lower end of the ranking, cities such as Gelsenkirchen and Duisburg can be found in particular, where the income is low and the cost of living hardly leaves little scope for prosperity. The study impressively shows that the gap between poor and the empire is further apart in Germany. A clear need for action for politics to make living conditions more fairly is unmistakable.
