Nordsternpark Gelsenkirchen: groundbreaking for future garden 2027!
On September 30, 2023, a solemn groundbreaking ceremony was officially initiated by the conversion of the reorganization in the Nordsternpark, an important measure as part of the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) Metropole Ruhr 2027. This step marks the beginning of a large redesign project that is supposed to transform the area on the Rhein-Herne channel into an attractive place of leisure and recreation.
took part in the event, including the mayor of Gelsenkirchen, Karin Welge, who highlighted the importance of this project in her speech. She emphasized that a new attraction is created here, where many people can enjoy nature in the future and spend time with their loved ones. "With today's groundbreaking, we lay the foundation for a new attraction in the north star park," she said.
meaning of IGA 2027
Andreas Bothe, the government president of the Münster government district, also underlined the importance of the project. He expressed the conviction that the construction of the Gelsenkirchen future garden could be a role model for other municipalities in Germany. This shows what options exist when various actors work together from politics and administration to develop a region in a future -oriented manner.
The regional director Garrelt Duin emphasized the creativity and the use that flow into the IGA Metropolis Ruhr 2027. "Durable and sustainable projects are created here that not only increase the quality of life of the people, but will also attract numerous guests," he said. The IGA 2027 will therefore prove to be a decisive event for the Ruhr metropolis, as it contributes to presenting the region as the greenest industrial region in Germany.
The head of the IGA Staff Office in Gelsenkirchen, Christoph Prinz, explained the concrete planning for the turning basin. The side arm of the Rhine is converted into a lively meeting point. Among other things, a barrier -free ramp that can overcome a height difference of around 7 meters are planned, as well as a café on the eastern bank with an outdoor area. In addition, a natural bank design is realized, which consists of reeds and heights.
Particular attention is paid to the design of rest and viewing platforms, which will also be accessible. The floating jetty that leads into the turning basin ends in an open, circular area, which further increases the attractiveness of the area. During the IGA exhibition from April to October 2027, a pontoon will pull over the turning basin that is planted with floating Wetland.
The redesign of the turning basin combines a variety of measures and is considered the largest sub -project within the outdoor facilities with around 3.8 million euros. The entire machining area comprises around 12,000 square meters, which illustrates the dimension of the project.
It was particularly symbolic that government president Bothe was given the golden spade when spading. This spade already has a historical importance, since it was previously used by the then NRW Prime Minister Johannes Rau to plant the first tree in the northern star park for Buga in 1997.
This historical bracket offers an interesting setting for a newly designed area, which is to become a place of relaxation and encounter for both the residents and for visitors to the region.
