Large diversions in the Ruhr area: A40 and A52 closed from October!

In the Ruhr area there are extensive construction work that affect two important motorways. From October 17th, both the A40 and the A52 between Essen and Gelsenkirchen will be completely closed in a direction of travel. These measures are necessary to renew the road covers and make traffic more secure on these busy routes.

The work is scheduled for a period of one week, the closures will take until October 24th. The block on the A40 affects the section between Essen-Zentrum and Gelsenkirchen-Süd in the direction of Dortmund, while the A52 between Essen-Berghausen and the Essen-Ost motorway triangle is affected in the same direction. The construction work includes the installation of "whisper asphalt", a special type of open -minded asphalt that reduces the noise level of the passing vehicles and thus improves the quality of life in the area.

closures and detour routes

An important aspect of this construction work is the associated diversions. The Essen-Center-West, Essen-Center-Ost, Essen-Huttrop, Essen-Frillendorf, Essen-Kray and Gelsenkirchen-Süd will not be accessible during the closure. Road users have to expect increased travel times and should consider alternative routes.

  • A40: The diversion begins at the Kaiserberg motorway junction and leads via the A3 towards Oberhausen. Vehicles below 3.5 tons should drive via the A42 towards Dortmund and on to the A43 to Bochum, while heavier trucks are diverted via the A2 and A45.
  • A52: The detour starts here from Essen-Süd via the K14 to the A40, whereby the direction of travel must also be taken into account here.

The Autobahn GmbH points out that due to weather conditions, such as heavy rain, the planned work and thus the sometimes necessary full closures could shift. This would also influence the traffic situation next year, since the section of the A40 in the direction of Duisburg is also to be renewed.

long -term planning

The upcoming changes are of great importance for residents and regular users of these highways. While the immediate work is carried out, road users will have to expect further full closures again next year. In view of the fact that traffic in the Ruhr area is already heavily burdened, this could lead to considerable traffic disruptions.

The Autobahn GmbH plans to continue the necessary renovation work in the summer of 2025. In the long term, these comprehensive measures should lead to an improvement in traffic safety and a reduction in noise pollution. With a well-tightened communication and diversion management, one hopes to make these circumstances as pleasant as possible for road users.
