In Gelsenkirchen there is a surprising life satisfaction! Despite the poor objective conditions, such as high unemployment and low incomes, the residents show remarkable satisfaction with their lives. According to the new “Glücksatlas”, the Gelsenkircheners occupy the 35th place of 40 cities, but they are classified as “overperformers”. That means: the people here are happier than the circumstances suggest!

The study created by scientists in cooperation with the South German class lottery shows that life satisfaction in Gelsenkirchen has risen to the level again in front of Corona pandemic. In a comparison of the largest cities in Germany, it turns out that the residents of Kassel enjoy the highest satisfaction. Interestingly, there are cities in which the living conditions are good, but the mood of people still remains bad.

A look at the lucky ranking

Gelsenkirchen may be far back in the ranking, but the positive attitude of the residents is a strong signal. The researchers emphasize that life satisfaction in the city is remarkably high, despite the challenges with which they are confronted. In this study, Gladbeck and Bottrop are missing, which further complicates the image of life satisfaction in the region. Gelsenkirchen shows that happiness not only depends on external circumstances, but also on the inner attitude of people.
