Vatican thriller Conclave: Human cardinals in power game!

London, Vereinigtes Königreich - London-the Austrian-Swiss director Edward Berger, known for his masterpiece "Nothing new" in the West, brings a fresh air to the film world with his new Vatican thriller "Conclave"! On November 21, the film celebrates its premiere and promises an exciting human drama behind the scenes of the pope election. Berger emphasizes that he does not want to operate church bashing with this work. Instead, he shows the cardinals as people with weaknesses and sins that are known to all of us.

In an interview with the German Press Agency, Berger explains that it was important to him to counter the characters. "They wear pompous costumes, but you still see people underneath," he says. The film is based on Robert Harris's novel and illuminates the intrigue and surprises that influence the choice of the new head of the church after the death of an advanced Pope. Ralph Fiennes, known from “Grand Budapest Hotel”, plays the leading role and brings the complex emotions of the characters to life.

A look behind the scenes

Berger, who cleared four Oscars with “Nothing new” in 2023, not only shows the power games within the church in “Conclave”, but also reflects the current power struggles in the world. "In every film you want to show the characters that you represent," said Berger. With this approach, the viewer is drawn into the human abysses of the protagonists and experiences a gripping story that goes far beyond the borders of the Vatican.
