Valencia in chaos: 215 dead and aid package of 10.6 billion euros!

Paiporta, Spanien - Valencia is in shock! A week after the devastating "unmistration of the century" in eastern Spain, which cost over 200 people, the disaster region looks bleak. Streets in over 60 heavily affected communities are still covered with mud. Garbage, broken furniture and stacked cars shape the image, as the haunting pictures of the TV station RTVE show.

But there is a ray of hope for the desperate flood victims: the central government has announced a gigantic aid package of 10.6 billion euros! Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized that this was just the first step. The help is urgently needed because the need is great. In Paiporta, the "Ground Zero" of the tragedy with around 27,000 inhabitants and around 70 fatalities, citizens complain about unbearable stench and the risk of rats. The mayor demands more heavy machines to cope with the chaos.

The desperate search for missing

The official number of fatalities was corrected from 217 to 215, but the number of unreported cases could be higher. 211 corpses have already been recovered in the popular province of Valencia, and many people are still missing. The search now focuses on underground garages and underground facilities, while the authorities fear that some victims were flushed into the Mediterranean. The rescue work has been supported since Tuesday by an amphibian ship of the Navy.

The regional government even requested auxiliary commitments of over 30 billion euros from Madrid, an amount that corresponds to the entire annual budget of the region. While the sun is shining above the disaster area, the question remains whether the aid package is sufficient to help the affected people. The worries of the citizens of Valencia dominate the worries about the missing and the need for further support
