Trevi fountain empty: Tourists throw coins into the new paddling pool!
ROM is in a state of emergency! The iconic Trevi fountain, a magnet for millions of tourists, has now been empty for massive restoration work. The fountain, which is considered a symbol of happiness and return to Rome, lies dry, and the question is: Where should the coins go? The city administration reacted quickly and built a provisional pool on the stages of the well so that visitors can still carry out their traditional coin tunnel.
Shortly after installing the new pool, numerous coins were found on the floor. Tourists crowded behind the freshly positioned fences to try their luck and throw their coins into the water. But social media are full of mockery about this curious situation. One user joked: "Imagine, you fly to Rome for hours, just to stand behind a fence in front of a paddling pool!" Another commented: "What kind of nonsense? It looks like an inflatable pool!"
preparations for the Holy Year 2025
The renovation work began at the beginning of October when the city of Rome locked the entire lower area of the fountain. The aim is to let the Trevi fountain shine in new splendor for the Holy Year 2025. In the coming year, access will be restricted as part of a pilot project to control the crowds. The Trevi fountain, a masterpiece of the 18th century, attracts droves of tourists every day who throw their coins back into the water in the hope of happiness.
