However, Scholz emphasized that he would not do this on his own, but that it would need many conversations and contacts in advance.

The Chancellor illustrated the urgency to also include Ukraine in the conversations. "It has to be worried that Ukraine can rely on us and others and do not have to fear that it will be left alone," said Scholz. He emphasized that it was important to find paths to end the conflict and avoid an escalation of the war. The right time for a conversation with Putin? "In the near future," Scholz replied promising.

Scholz 'diplomatic efforts

As early as October, Scholz had emphasized his willingness to talk to Putin about just peace in Ukraine. The last telephone contact took place in December 2022, where he called for a diplomatic solution and the withdrawal of the Russian troops. In June, he explained that a future conversation with Putin would only make sense if there were concrete topics to discuss. Moscow recently signaled that Putin is open to a dialogue, even if the relationships between Moscow and Berlin are currently at a low point.
