The humanitarian situation in Syria is catastrophic, because the country is full of land mines and non -exploded explosive bodies, which after more than 13 years of civil war are an acute danger to the population. The British aid organization Halo Trust urgently demands international efforts to eliminate these dangers. "Returning Syrians simply do not know where the country mines lie and wait. They are scattered over fields, villages and cities, so people are terribly endangered," explains Halo Trust. According to estimates, there are millions of land mines in the country that are a constant threat to the civilian population. The return of hundreds of thousands of refugees could prove to be fatal, since it could take decades for all mines to be cleared, warned Damian O’Brien, head of the Syria program at Halo Trust.

The complexity of the frozen conflict in Syria requires targeted efforts in certain regions. Halo Trust therefore operates especially in the northwest, especially near Aleppo and in the province of Idlib. Again and again, entering areas contaminated with mines leads to tragic, unnecessary accidents, since tens of thousands of people go through dirty landscapes every day.
