Fast flood protection: Duisburg's Marientor is being renovated!

In a significant step for the infrastructural security of the Duisburg city center, the Düsseldorf district government gave the green light for the renovation of the historical blocking works Marientor. This approval was granted in May, which was seven months faster than originally planned. Thanks to this quick decision, the necessary renovation work on the almost 100 -year -old building can be started immediately.

The Marientor blocking plant is crucial for flood protection in the region and protects around 20,000 citizens and assets that are valued worth over 2 billion euros. Despite several overhaul in the recent past, the building no longer fulfills today's security standards. The technical components, such as the lock gate and the machines, are strongly overhauled and urgently need a renewal.

The emergency closure as a security guarantee

In order to continue to protect the city from flooding during the upcoming renovation, an emergency closure was integrated into the system in December 2016. This consists of 13 solid dam beams, which were also funded by the country. The emergency closure ensures that the city of Duisburg does not remain unprotected even during the renovation work, an essential measure in view of the possible flood risk.

"The close cooperation with the city of Duisburg and the rapid processing of the funding application by the district government made it possible for the renovation work to begin now. This is of crucial importance for the flood protection and the security of the citizens of Duisburg," said President Thomas Schürmann.

The upcoming measures promise to ensure the long -term security of the Duisburg population and to significantly strengthen the resilience of the infrastructure against future flood events. The promotion of 20 million euros by the district government is a commitment to a more robust flood protection and testifies to the striving to bring the outdated infrastructure up to date.
