In the morning of April 16, 2025, the Düsseldorf fire brigade was called to a devastating fire in the attic of an apartment building on Paulsmühlenstrasse in Benrath. Shortly before 11 a.m. there were several emergency calls that drew attention to the fire. When the first emergency services arrived, the situation was confirmed: the fire had broken out on the top floor, and one person was still in the apartment.

The rescue workers reacted immediately and carried out both human rescue and fire fighting. A total of around 50 emergency services were on site, with two turntable ladders being used to save another person from the building. Despite the intensive efforts, however, it could not be prevented that a person died at the site.
