Students in NRW: Over 1 million with immigration history!

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the proportion of pupils with immigration history has achieved an alarming brand: they now make up a whopping 43.0 percent of the around 2.5 million students! According to the State Statistical Office Information and Technology North Rhine-Westphalia (IT.NRW), these figures increased drastically in the school year 2023/24. Five years ago, the proportion was still 36.9 percent - the trend clearly points up!

Three cities stand out particularly when it comes to the proportion of students with immigration history. Wuppertal leads the list with overwhelming 58.6 percent, followed by Duisburg with 58.3 percent and Gelsenkirchen 57.7 percent. In a dramatic contrast, the circles of Coesfeld, Borken and Euskirchen are located, where the shares are 22.8 percent and less significantly lower. This difference illustrates the immense geographical diversity of the student body within the federal state.

The distribution of the students shows exciting patterns: around 31.4 percent of the students with immigration history attend primary schools. In contrast, only about 26.7 percent of the students can be found in these early educational institutions without immigration history. Almost half of the students with immigration history, on the other hand, are enrolled in comprehensive schools, high schools or vocational colleges. This raises interesting questions about the integration and educational paths in NRW. So it shows that the educational landscape in the country is always multicultural and challenges, as well as opportunities, brings with it!

The definition of students with immigration history includes those who were born abroad migrated to Germany or whose parents come from abroad. This shows that this is much more about origin-it is a story of many that is told in the schools of North Hein-Westfalen.
