Children's University Send: Researchers reports about glaciers and mars secrets!

The new semester of the children's university has started with an exciting topic: Marsforschung! The deputy headmaster of the Joseph-Haydn-Gymnasium, Ulrich Staarmann, and the experts Gregor Leydag and Heribert Woestmann from the International Center for Talent Research at the University of Münster (ICBF) welcomed the young students. They provided them with the renowned Prof. Dr. Harald Hiesinger, who has caused enthusiasm several times with his captivating lectures.

Spitzbergen: A Mars-like laboratory

Prof. Hiesinger kidnapped the children into the fascinating world of Spitzbergens, a remote island group that lies at about 80 degrees north. Here, where the temperatures are icy and the landscape of glaciers, the researchers find ideal conditions to decrypt the secrets of Mars. The breathtaking backdrop with fjords, high mountains and tundra-like vegetation not only offers a spectacular picture, but is also crucial for understanding the interface. In summer the sun remains continuously in the sky, while winter is wrapped in the dark - perfect conditions to study the glaciers of the red planet.

challenges of research

But research is anything but easy! Prof. Hiesinger reported on the extreme conditions under which the scientists have to work. With every outdoor toilet, you not only take toilet paper and a spade, but also a rifle - for fear of polar bears! The children listened to the exciting stories and asked many questions. Some of the answers were so smart that they surprised the professors. The Freundeskreis of the Children's University, which organizes the event, is enthusiastic and is already planning further exciting lectures for the winter semester, including one about nuclear physics in December. The curiosity of the young researchers has aroused - and the adventures of Marsforschung have just started!
