Bottrop becomes the center of climate experts: ideas for the future!

bottrop attracts attention, because here an expert forum meets that discusses important approaches to adapting to climate change. On two days, around 300 experts from various offices and disciplines gather in the Emscher-Lippe region to develop innovative solutions. This is done as part of the Future Initiative Klima.Werk, which has been active for ten years now and deals with the challenges of drought and heavy rainfall.

Henrike Abromeit, the head of urban environmental planning and co -organizer of the conference, emphasizes that the event is the highlight of this initiative. "We develop solutions in workshops and set new topics," emphasizes Abromeit as part of a press conference. In addition, excursions are planned to neighboring cities to promote the exchange among themselves. The motto "trade in change - a leaf donate no shadow" illustrates the goal of promoting active action in the encounter with the challenges of climate change.

climate adjustment in the focus

This conference is all about local climate adjustment. In contrast to global climate protection measures, the effects of which are often less likely, the approaches of the conference aim to increase the quality of life on site. "When we plant facades and roofs, we not only create green oases, but also filter fine dust from the air," explains Abromeit. Such initiatives help create a pleasant microclimate in the city.

A central theme of the forum is the concept of the sponge city: an innovative approach to effectively use rainwater. This is collected in special “pores” and released as required. Examples of such measures are infiltration troughs, rigoles and natural streams. The city's natural water cycle is actively used to better manage the effects of precipitation.

Andreas Giga, head of the service organization of the future initiative Klima.Werk at the Emschergenossenschaft and the Lippe Association, explains that the majority of the rainwater currently flow through mixed water channels. "We are committed to keeping the water in the cities and creating attractive places through evaporation cooling," said Giga. Around 500 projects have been successfully implemented in the past ten years.

The initiative calls for cooperation. "We need the voluntary commitment of all actors - cities, businesses, industry and citizens - to become active together," emphasizes Giga. The exchange and the cooperation are crucial to finally act from talking. In times of climate change in which every municipality faces its own challenges, such a dialogue is of the greatest importance.
