Reading is becoming increasingly important in today's society, and the commitment of the local community impressively shows how much children and adolescents can benefit from reading projects. The Lions Club Hamaland and the Sparkassenstiftung for the district of Borken are committed together with the libraries and the district administration to promote love for reading. In a few weeks, the reading competition for the fourth classes and the competition of the Börsenverein for the German book trade for the sixth classes in the Borken district.
The competitions offer students the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in reading and performing. Not only is their talent encouraged, but also strengthened self -confidence. Michael Schürmann, head of the St. Georg public library in Vreden, emphasizes that the children recognize through reading at such events that their peers also have a passion for books and reading. "The competitions are also intended to motivate the boys and girls to deal with current children's and youth literature and to show their enthusiasm for reading," explains Schürmann.

The first preliminary decisions in schools will start in the coming weeks. Here the best participants are determined that qualify for the regional distribution next year. This exciting phase of the competition culminates in the grand finale on February 22, 2025 in the Borken district house. In the first round, the students present a book of their choice that is particularly important to them and explain why they chose this title. Then read a section from it, followed by a foreign text. The jury consists of representatives of the libraries, book dealers and teachers.
In recognition of the services of the winners, books and book vouchers are available, which are donated by the Sparkassenstiftung for the district of Borken and the Lions Club Hamaland. But that's not all: A special event is raffled off for all schools that take part in the district decision.
Last year, the competition experienced a lively influx with around 1,800 young readers from 55 primary schools and 2,735 participants from 36 secondary schools. The organizers are optimistic that this new round will also be accepted as well. The integration strategy of the organizers, which also includes the support of the Borken district of Borken, promises a first -class platform for reading enthusiasts.
The events of such events not only promote the literary interest in children, but also creates an appreciative environment in which every voice counts.
