Flood alarm in NRW: How to protect yourself from flooding!
The flood season 2024 is just around the corner, and North Rhine-Westphalia is preparing for possible winter floods! The Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport has started a comprehensive range of information in order to inform the citizens about rising water levels and to warn of dangers. With an impressive network of 304 levels, including 98 own flood registration levels, the population is kept up to date in real time about critical situations.
Minister Oliver Krischer underlines the urgency of these measures: "The climate crisis makes extreme weather events more common in NRW." The country has undertaken to drastically improve flood protection and made over 80 million euros for protective measures in 2023 and 2024. This is an enormous increase compared to the 30 million euros in 2015!
diverse information offers for citizens
The most important sources of information include the NRW flood portal, the Warn app Nina and the Environmental Portal NRW. The flood portal continuously provides information about the measurement data of the level, while the Nina app users inform about flood warnings in real time. The environmental portal is the central point of contact for all official data and offers access to extensive environmental information.
For the citizens who want to learn more about the risks in their surroundings, the Flood Check app and the flood hazard cards are available. These tools help to evaluate the personal flood risk and take targeted precautions. With these initiatives, a clear step towards better preparation for the challenges of the upcoming flood season is taken. It remains to be seen how the weather situation will develop, but the preparations are made!
