Pollutants in the Bonn university high-rise: demolition work finally start!

In Bonn, massive renovation work is imminent: the high -rise at Römerstraße 164, a remains of the former pedagogical faculty of the University of Bonn, is expected to be demolished in early 2025. This building, which has been considered "Lost Place" since its evacuation in 2010 due to serious pollutant loads by PCB, had been used for research purposes, but under strict requirements. Preparations for the demolition have already started, as the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reported.

pollutant renovation and demolition

The high -rise, which has been unused for more than a decade, was a significant risk of health. PCB, which was often used in building materials at the time and were carcinogenic at the time, were already demonstrated in questionable concentrations in 2004. Since an uncontrolled demolition could release the pollutants, careful pollutant renovation will be necessary. Before the actual demolition can take place, the dangerous materials are properly removed and disposed of. As the Schayan-compass , in addition to PCB, other dangerous building materials, such as asbestos, can also be found in such buildings, which requires a comprehensive test.

As part of the work, the building will be dismantled in two phases: first the pollutant renovation, followed by the actual demolition work. The construction and property company NRW emphasized the urgency of these measures that are necessary to eliminate the dangers for residents and passers-by. The high-rise, which was once jokingly referred to by the students as a "small gun nobl", is protected from a further hazard through these comprehensive security measures.
