Merz calls for the turn: 2025 is our directional decision!
Bonn, Deutschland - On January 5, 2025, Friedrich Merz celebrated the 149th birthday of Konrad Adenauer on Petersberg near Bonn. Merz plans to follow in the footsteps of the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany as Chancellor. In his speech, he described the impending election in 2025 as a "directional decision" and compared it to the elections of 1949, 1953 and 1990.
As part of the celebrations, Merz previously visited Adenauer's grave and congratulated other statesmen. The Konrad Adenauer Foundation announced its speech under the title "Germany-a reliable partner for freedom, prosperity and security". In his fundamental speech, Merz focused on the conservative roots of the Union and addressed the security policy guideline: "We want to be able to defend ourselves in order not to have to defend."
political content and demands
Merz called for stronger European personal responsibility and emphasized the importance of west bond and transatlantic relationships. In addition, he addressed the need to look at the east, especially on the Baltic States and Poland. He called for a fundamental change of policy in the economy and saw the importance of industrial added value as a prerequisite for a prospering society. Merz made it clear that a flourishing economy is a prerequisite for social and environmental policy as well as for the trust of the citizens.
The political landscape is strongly in focus before the Bundestag election on February 23, 2025, because Merz plans to run as a chancellor. Norbert Lammert, the chairman of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, pointed out the successor of Merz as CDU chairman. Adenauer, who died in 1967 at the age of 91, is considered the key figure in the history of the CDU and Germany. In his speech, Merz emphasized the political achievements and the life of Adenauer and described his life as "exceptional life in a political state of emergency".
In view of the current political challenges, especially in the government dispute of the traffic lights, Merz pulled parallels between Adenauer's time and today's situation, especially in relation to France and the economy. He expressed that all efforts had to be reinforced to ensure prosperity, freedom and security in Germany. Merz also spoke of feelings of injustice in the country and the need to promote the idea of a just performance society. He underlined the importance of the 2025 election, which he characterized as another "directional decision", similar to the election of 1949.Further information on this topic are at Süddeutsche.de and rp-online.de to be found.
