Lent 2025: Initiatives for more charity and responsibility for creation
Wien, Österreich - Vienna, March 04, 2025 - the Catholic Church has announced an extensive program for the upcoming Lent period, which lasts from March 5 to April 19. The focus is on return to creation and charity. As part of this initiative, a variety of offers such as fasting impulses, neighborhood actions and lectures on the climate crisis are provided. "Breathe" is an email campaign by the Bible work Linz, in which weekly impulses should encourage people to reflect. These start on Ash Wednesday and end on Easter Monday to enable the believers to get a deeper connection during this period of waiver, the diocese of Linz.
reportedIn addition, the working group for Catholic Family Education e.V. Bonn with the "7 weeks yes" campaign offers digital suggestions that enable families to spend more time together without concentrating in giving up. Another innovative approach is the neighborhood initiative "The door of your neighbor is your holy gate", which encourages people to bring blessings during Lent. For this purpose, the Gurk diocese provides free material to promote contact with fellow citizens, as can be seen from the information of the diocese.
climate protection and global commitment
On the occasion of the ten -year anniversary of the encyclical "Laudato Si" by Pope Francis, the focus this year is on climate protection. The Fasting Calendar of the Steyler missionaries meets this topic with impulses to think and at the same time supports a sustainable tree planting project in Togo. Under the direction of the Steyler missionaries, over 10,000 trees have already been planted in several parishes to preserve creation and to strengthen the local population in their responsibility, as P. Stephan Dähler reported. These measures are not only a sign of solidarity, but also show the active participation of the church members in the field of environmental protection.
Another player of this commitment is the order of the "servants of the Holy Spirit", founded in 1894 by Arnold Janssen. This female order, which has been working in various social tasks since it was founded, is currently promoting contact to excluded persons and is working intensively on projects for responsibility for creation. The sisters look after different facilities, including protective apartments for former prostitutes and victims of human trafficking. Their goal is to work with lay people and to offer young people the opportunity to volunteer abroad. In this way, the connection between faith and social action is still strengthened, as reported on Katholisch.at.
