Zugchaos in North Rhine-Westphalia: Six months further failures for re-lines!

Train traffic in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) faces major challenges: The National Express emergency schedule for lines RE 4 (Aachen Hbf-Dortmund Hbf) and RE 11 (Düsseldorf Hbf-Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe) is extended for another six months. This decision was made on the basis of a continuing lack of personnel that significantly affects the company. This means that the thinned-out timetable remains in force by June 15, 2025, such as Ruhr24.de reported.

The RE 4 is particularly affected because many trips are completely omitted at night. For example, the connections between Aachen and Düsseldorf are greatly reduced, which poses many commuters with major problems. The RE 11 is still only offered to a limited extent, especially at the main train stations in Duisburg, Essen, Bochum and Dortmund, passengers have to do without this connection. The section between Düsseldorf Hbf and Hamm (Westf) Hbf is only served in exceptions, while the rest regularly wrong, such as t-online.de reported.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia has initiated a program for recruitment, but also aims at career changers who strive for a job as a train driver after retraining. "The need is great," says the operators, "and we urgently have to act." Until the recovery of the personnel bottlenecks, the passengers have to adjust to fuller trains and limited connections.
