Refurbishment of the Uelzen city wall: monument protection for the future!
Uelzen, Deutschland - On January 8, 2025, the renovation work on the historic city wall in Uelzen began. These measures focus on the sub -area on Turmstrasse and include several steps: cleaning the wall, protection against plant roots, the exchange of stones and the renewal of the joints. As part of this work, an ash must be removed because its root work endangers the stability of the wall. The Uelzen city wall is considered an important monument to medieval and early modern city history.
City spokeswoman Ute Krüger emphasized the importance of the individual monument for future generations. As early as 2020, the need for renovation was determined, which led to damage mapping and renovation planning by a monument care office and an office for construction statics. The renovation work is divided into three sections: the Mühlenstraße and Rosenmauer follow the Turmstrasse area in the coming years.
financing and costs
The costs for the first section of the renovation work on the city wall amount to around 356,000 euros. An additional 975,000 euros are required for the renovation of the Mühlenstraße and Rosenmauer sections. In order to ensure financing, an application for urban development agents from the "Living Centers" program was submitted to the state of Lower Saxony. A decision on these funding is expected to be made in the second half of 2025.
The origin of the city wall goes back to the 14th century when Uelzen built a wall that enclosed the then central city. The wall was 1.3 kilometers long and some sections reached a height of up to four meters. It not only served to protect against dangers, but also the control of passenger traffic through three goals and the collection of tariffs and fees. Only a few parts of the original wall are preserved today, and the sections obtained on Turmstrasse, Mühlenstraße and Rosenmauer are in need of renovation. The renovation has been discussed for years and the company committee of culture, tourism and city marketing will discuss the situation on May 30, 2024. City Archäologist Dr. Mathias Hensch will explain the condition of the city wall, and the award for the renovation should also be discussed in a non -public meeting.
