To clear at Uelzen airfield: Trees fall under floodlights by Saturday!

A dramatic intervention in nature has started at Barnsen airfield! Since Thursday morning, November 14th, a two hectare forest area at the eastern end of the runway of Uelzen airfield has been cleared at the eastern end. The district of Uelzen has commissioned the controversial felling work, which should be completed by Saturday evening, November 16. A powerful harvester, also called wooden harvest, eats through the high trees, while the public was informed about the security measures: "The forest area concerned should be avoided," said the district administration.

The clearing is necessary for reasons of flight safety because trees grown too high must be removed. Despite a contradiction by the Nature Conservation Association of Lower Saxony (NABU), the district has ordered the immediate execution of approval. "The pure clearing work should be completed by the end of this week," said district spokesman Martin Theine. The work even takes place under "floodlights" at night in order to optimally use the limited availability of the large device. The access road to the airfield was cordoned off and the police are present to prevent possible protests from opponents of the felling.

protests and resistance

Fritz Kaune, a member of the NABU board, described the clearing as a "night and fog campaign" and expressed his outrage about the decision of the district. "It's terrifying and a first -degree mess," he said. Kaune had already hired a lawyer to take action against the immediate execution at the Lüneburg Administrative Court, but the time is urged. "The disappointment is excessive," he added, while pointing out the lack of support from the NABU state association.

The wood remains stacked on site and will be removed later. The district also plans to reforest with low -growing trees and a reforestation of over two hectares elsewhere. Despite the controversy, nature at the Barnsen airfield will be changed in the coming days.
