Election workers urgently wanted: This is how you can support democracy!
Stadthagen. On February 23, 120 election workers are being sought in Stadthagen! But not only here, but also throughout Schaumburg and nationwide, volunteers are required - a total of 650,000 in Germany! But be careful: election workers are not paid, but only receive an allowance. Sometimes a grateful voter even brings a piece of chocolate over! The Ministry of the Interior emphasizes: "Engagement as an election assistant is a service for democracy and the possibility of free elections."
Did you know that the election office can write to citizens if not enough volunteers are found? So if you don't report, you could be obliged! You can only reject for good reasons such as job, illness or physical impairments. This is not fun!
Who can become election workers?
Every German entitled to vote can become election workers! This means that you have to have German citizenship and live in the community where you help. As a rule, the election workers are appointed from the eligible voters of the municipality.
As a newcomer, you usually start as an assessor - you spend on ballot papers and count after the election. If you already have experience, you can be used as secretary or election leader. The latter is responsible for the polling station and is the "host". The main responsible people are trained before the election and receive 25 euros for their efforts, while election leader get 35 euros. There are even additional refreshment allowance in some communities!
