Peanuts in Lower Saxony: A farmer revolutionizes agriculture!
A sensational breakthrough in Lower Saxony! Steffen Meyer, a brave farmer from Kirchwahlingen, wrote history by the first to grow and harvest peanuts in the region. These nuts, which normally thrive in the warm realms of Africa and South America, have now found their way to the Lower Saxony Earth-and thanks to the innovative work of researchers and a committed agricultural student!
In May last year, after the dreaded ice saints, Meyer began planting the peanuts by hand in specially prepared savings strains with his employees. This method makes harvesting considerably because the plants are not buried deep in the ground. A converted potato rotor is now used for the upcoming harvest. "Of course, this makes it easier for us to harvest," explains Meyer, who is actually known as a asparagus builder.
a team full of ideas and courage
The idea of growing peanuts in Lower Saxony came from a feasibility study that Meyer carried out together with his employee Lena Meyer from Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. Despite the initial skepticism of professors and plant engineering experts, the joy was huge when they held the first real peanuts in their hands during the first harvest. "In the end we were totally happy," says Lena Meyer.
The cultivation of peanuts is not only an experiment, but also an answer to climate change. Meyer is determined to further promote the peanut cultivation, even if the investment is not yet paying off. The freshly harvested legumes are initially dried for three weeks before they are processed into oil. A regional customer, an ice cream factory, is already planning to create delicious peanut ice cream from it. Interest in these "exotic" plants is growing, and the upscale gastronomy has already knocked on. Meyer has big plans for the future - the peanuts are just the beginning!
