Oldenburg becomes green: On the way to the natural cityscape!
In Oldenburg, an important project for promoting green spaces in urban areas is currently being promoted. On September 1, the city joined the “Stadtgrün Naturzt” label process, which was launched by the Alliance municipalities for Biological Diversity. The aim is to support the natural development of green spaces and thus increase the quality of life of the citizens and to promote biodiversity.
Scientific studies show that the proximity to natural areas increases both health and satisfaction of the population. Green areas that are less often mowed offer space for numerous plant species and promote the quality of life of insects and animals. Oldenburg is already one of the cities that actively work to improve their green areas.
advantages of the label "Stadtgrün Natural"
Through membership in the network, Oldenburg benefits from professional support in planning measures to increase biological diversity and public relations. "We want to do more for insects and promote diversity in our cities," explained Robert Spreter, managing director of the alliance, and underlined the commitment to sustainable urban development. City building councilor Christine-Petra Schacht emphasized that the city green strategy is already being developed in the sense of an ecological climate to benefit from funding.
The label is an award for cities that implement ecological green space management. The criteria include the use of local seeds and the absence of pesticides. In 2024, around 70 municipalities are to bear the label, which underlines the importance of the project. The process is supported by the funds of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, which ensures financial support for the communities involved.
Against the background of these efforts, Oldenburg has already taken the first measures: wildflower meadows have been created at various locations in the city. Around 900,000 flower bulbs were planted throughout the city. The focus is not only on the creation of new areas, but also on the care and development of existing green areas. The responsible struts to further expand Oldenburg's character as a "green garden large city" and at the same time keep a high ecological standard.
As part of the procedure, the participating cities go through a one -year process in which they document their existing nursing practices and measures. A measure plan is then drawn up that testifies the nature -related development of the city. Successful participants are rewarded with awards in bronze, silver or gold at the end of the procedure. Schacht expressed the wish that Oldenburg could reach the silver award on the first attempt.
The project clearly addresses the city's commitment to nature and the population. Citizens are invited to bring their ideas and suggestions for suitable areas for the construction of wildflower meadows by email. Such hands -on activities strengthen the sense of community and offer citizens the opportunity to actively contribute to the beautification of their city.
The long -term vision not only includes the creation of new areas, but also the sustainable maintenance and development of the existing green areas. The conversion of green areas is seen as a continuous process that requires time and patience. This ensures that Oldenburg can continue to preserve and expand its ecological heritage in the future. Further information on the various measures and the green spaces in Oldenburg can be found on the urban website.
