Lüneburg. Winter is just around the corner, and the question that concerns us all: Does it get cold or remains mild? After a consistently mild December and January, which gave us more spring -like temperatures, February 2018 could surprise us with icy cold. But the memory of the last strict winter has long since faded - it was six years ago!

The weather forecasts indicate that we have to adjust to an overall too warm winter. The American and German weather services expect a winter that will be around two degrees above average. December in particular is predicted as grubby and wet, while January may offer the best opportunities for winter activities. Anyone hoping for a sleigh ride could get their money's worth in January if the temperatures drop.

Winter weather: Cold is possible!

But hope for a real winter is not quite lost! With stable winds from north to east, it could also be frosty in the flatlands. The second and third January decade are traditionally the coldest phases of winter. And when we look at the peasant rules, it turns out that a foggy Martin's Day often indicates a mild winter - the likelihood for this is 75 percent!

But what specifically awaits us? While February is expected to become mild and moist, January may bring the longed -for cold. Massive storm lows from the North Sea bring polar cold air with it, which could give us rain, snow and pear. However, the overall winter trend will be rather disappointing: mild temperatures, little snow and the view of white Christmas is low. Winter will probably spoil us with wet and cloudy days!
