Successful seminar on dike defense: This is how we protect Bleckede!

In the idyllic city of Bleckede, an exciting day of the dike defense took place last Saturday. The event was organized at the fire station and brought together 30 dedicated participants from the entire district of Lüneburg. Fire brigade spokesman Carsten Schmidt explained the importance of this advanced training, which was dedicated not only to the theory but also the practical application.

The training started with a comprehensive theoretical introduction. The participants learned a lot about building dikes, which types of damage can occur and which measures the fire brigade can take to limit damage. This theoretical framework is essential in order to be able to react adequately in practice, especially with regard to the current challenges through climate change and possible flood events.

practical exercises for sandbag filling

After the theoretical introduction, the practical part followed. Over 600 sandbags were filled at three stations, with the district's sandbag filling machine being used. In addition, the emergency services gripped with hand and filled sandbags manually. These filled sandbags are of crucial importance for the other training stations.

The exercises included space load, loading and the construction of source cades as well as dike base protection. Particularly noteworthy is the "practice dike", which is not only a simple sand camp, but also represents the training area for this important initiative. Its embankment angles are precisely matched to the Elbe dike, and after the greening it is called the shortest dike in the district. These many details show how carefully and realistically the training conditions were designed.

The concept of further training was developed in a cooperation between the fire brigade, the Artlenburg dike association (ADV) and the Lower Saxony State Operation for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN). The dedicated team of trainers and the logistics were provided by members of the Bleckede fire brigade and the building yard of the city of Bleckede. This cooperation underlines the importance of common efforts in disaster prevention.

Overall, this was the ninth daily training for the district training for dike defense. With a previous test seminar, over 300 emergency services in this critical area were trained. The training on the "shortest dike in the district" is a real success and is an important contribution to preparing for the dangers that can bring about flood events. Such initiatives are crucial to better protect communities and be prepared for future challenges.
