Migrants in the USA: indispensable for food supply!

Stand: 02.11.2024 11:56 a.m.

In the USA it is bubbling! Migration is a bangling apple: Republicans are afraid of immigrants, while the Democrats pursue a migrationless migration policy. But the truth is, without migrants, food supply could be in danger!

Eleazar Guevara, a brave Mexican from San Luis Potosí, crossed the border with an H2A work visa for five years and tackled in North Carolina in the field. But working conditions are anything but fair! In extreme heat, he and his colleagues worked in unworthy conditions for up to twelve hours a day - just two showers and four toilets for 50 workers! If someone gets out, it is not uncommon.

The dark side of the season work

Last year Guevara experienced a shocking turn: employers withdraw their ID cards to check them. "It was a punishment because some went earlier," reports the 34-year-old. But he didn't give up! With the support of an NGO that is committed to the rights of migrants, he fought against exploitation. "We are constantly hearing from unpaid wages and attacks by superiors," explains Francisco Díaz, the spokesman for the organization.

The situation is already precarious for migrants with temporary working visa, but the situation for many illegal workers is even worse. "A temporary visa does not help if they flee before persecution," criticizes Díaz. In the meantime, the topic of migration in the election campaign is exploited by the candidates: Donald Trump describes migrants as "invasion", while Joe Biden issued stricter rules of asylum that allow the authorities to reject applications without an examination. Kamala Harris even plans a five -year blocking period for illegal border crossers!

A dangerous game with the truth

Hardly anyone speaks that the USA urgently need young workers and already suffer from a shortage of skilled workers. Migrants, especially from Mexico, are crucial for the food supply for US households. In the household year 2022, over 275,000 of the 300,000 granted visa received Mexican citizens. But despite their importance, they learn discrimination and agitation.

Stricter Immigration Act could further strengthen the fears of the workers and prevent them from standing up for their rights. Guevara warns: "The USA is dependent on our work, not only on Mexico, but also from other parts of Central America and the world. We are indispensable workers!"
