Lower Saxony threatens to exclude: Guest fans in danger!

Lower Saxony's interior and sports minister Daniela Behrens has made clear announcements: In the event of further riots during the Lower Saxony Derby on October 6th between Eintracht Braunschweig and Hannover 96 there is a threat of a complete exclusion of guest fans. In an interview with the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung", the SPD politician announced that the number of guest fans has already been reduced by 40 percent from 2,100 to only 1,260. If the new concept does not lead to a reassurance of the situation, guest fans would no longer be permitted in the future.

The minister expressed sharp criticism of the ultra-scenes of the two clubs and the German Football Association (DFB). "There are apparently hardly any self -reflection in the ultra scene. Instead of looking for a serious conversation about the problem, violence in the stadium is downplayed or only postponed the police," explained Behrens. This statement clearly shows that it calls for an initiative for cooperation, which has not yet been offered by the ultra scene.

with regard to the proposal of the Senator of Bremen Ulrich Mäurer to punish clubs with repeated injuries by their fans, such as the burning of pyrotechnics, with point deductions, Behrens was open to being opened. It considers it useful to consistently apply existing regulations of the DFB instead of rarely using it. In the event of riots, game dropouts are already possible, but according to Behrens, this measure is hardly used in practice.

On the dialogue about stadium force, the minister notices: "I do not have the impression that the ultra scenes are interested in a conversation. A common basis would be necessary, and this includes a clear confession that violence in the stadium is unacceptable." This makes it clear that the minister not only wants to address the situation, but also want to develop solutions to prevent future violence.

The situation around the fan groups remains tense, and the upcoming derby could be another test stone for the security measures in German football. The pressure on the clubs and the DFB increases to take measures that guarantee both the security of the audience and change fan behavior sustainably.

An aspect that should not be unmentioned in the discussion about fan power is the responsibility of the clubs themselves. If you do not decide against your violent supporters, you could ultimately affect the suffering fans and the entire club environment. Behrens' upcoming measures could not only increase security in the stadium, but also toast a positive change within the fan culture.
