Hameln introduces accommodation tax: companies have to act now!

The city of Hameln plans an innovation for its accommodation companies: from January 1, 2025, an overnight stay will be introduced. This decision was made on September 11th in a council meeting and affects all operators of hotels, guest houses, holiday apartments and similar accommodations. Affected entrepreneurs can stand by the city in the coming days in which the details are explained.

The specified tax rate is four percent of the gross accommodation price. It is important to know that this is an indirect tax. This means that the operators can decide for themselves whether they pass on the tax to their guests or whether they wear them themselves. This gives them flexibility in pricing, but also leads to possible price increases for the overnight guests.

Details for tax registration

In order to minimize the administrative effort, the tax registration is carried out in terms of quarterly. Overnight stays that were booked before October 1, 2024, but will not take place until 2025, are released from the tax. This could be important for many travelers and planners of school trips. In addition, teachers who accompany school trips and volunteer youth leaders are exempt from tax, which shows customer friendliness.

With the introduction of this tax, the city of Hameln pursues an important goal: it wants to secure the city's tourist structures, such as the local museum and the services of Hameln Marketing and Tourismus GmbH. Representatives of the city expressed that it was essential to avoid closures and savings that could negatively influence tourism in Hameln. The proceeds from the accommodation tax should therefore be targeted in order to maintain the attractiveness of the city for tourists.

operators who have so far received no information about this new regulation are asked to report either by phone at 05151/202-1384 or by email.
