Free guide: This is how municipalities promote biodiversity!

A groundbreaking step for nature: The nationwide biotope network project has published a free guideline that is intended to help municipalities promote domestic biodiversity! This unique brochure offers practical instructions and valuable insights into how settlement areas and outdoor areas can be transformed into true habitats for flora and fauna.

The 67-page brochure, which was created under the direction of the renowned Heinz Sielmann Foundation, summarizes the findings from over three years of intensive project work. The aim is to improve the networking of biologically valuable habitats nationwide. "The municipalities are decisive players and partners to better combine biotopes," explains Sabine Riewenherm, President of the Federal Office for Nature Conservation (BFN). The guide not only contains practical advice, but also an overview of financial funding opportunities and contacts for committed municipalities.

practical solutions for municipalities

Robert Spreter, managing director of the alliance "Municipalities for Biological Diversity", emphasizes: "The guide offers numerous practical examples and solutions that lower the inhibition threshold for municipalities and private individuals, start biotope projects." This initiative is a call to all those responsible to actively work for the preservation of biodiversity. "It's about nothing less than the future of humanity," emphasizes Dr.-Ing. E. h. Fritz Brickwedde, chairman of the foundation council of the Heinz Sielmann Foundation.

The biotope network project, which was funded from September 2020 to July 2024 as part of the federal program on biological diversity, has implemented model projects for upgrading and networking biotopes in various regions, including Rügen, the county of Bentheim and the Ampertal. The knowledge gained from this is flowing directly into the new guide, which is now available as a free download on the project's website or can be ordered in printed form.
