World War II bomb in Kassel: rail traffic paralyzed and residents evacuated!
Göttingen/Kassel. From around 2 p.m. there were massive disorders and train failures in long -distance transport via Kassel after a world war bomb weighing a 50 kilogram bomb was discovered on a construction site at a marshalling yard. Wilhelmshöhe's ICE station was closed until the evening, while the federal police and the city of Kassel informed the population about the upcoming defusing. The bomb was at a depth of 1.20 to 1.50 meters and was a serious danger.
The situation quickly escalated: around 2600 residents were evacuated within a radius of half a kilometer. People had to leave their apartments while the experts prepared for the defusing. "A return before 10 p.m. is not to be expected," it said in the afternoon, which further increased the tension among the population.
train traffic
The effects on the long-distance traffic of Deutsche Bahn were significant. The ICE train station Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe was closed and the affected trains had to be diverted, which led to delays of about 30 minutes. The connections between Hamburg, Berlin and Frankfurt, which drove over Göttingen, were particularly affected. Travelers had to prepare for significantly longer waiting times, since many ICE and IC had more than half an hour delay from Göttingen. A chaos that excited the travelers!
