Stable training numbers in Göttingen: opportunities for young talents!

Göttingen. In an alarming trend, almost half of the companies in Lower Saxony have difficulty finding suitable trainees! According to Christian Grascha, the head of the IHK Göttingen, 48 percent of the companies nationwide report that they cannot fill open training positions. It looks similar in Göttingen. The reasons are diverse: sometimes it just doesn't fit with the applicants, but sometimes they are missing completely!

The training numbers for the period from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024 show a mixed picture. Klaudia Silbermann, head of the Göttingen Employment Agency, reports of 3067 apprenticeships and 2181 applicants - an increase of 1.3 percent compared to the previous year. But the reality is sobering: only 72 training offers came to 100 training opportunities! In 2014 there were still 114 applicants on 100 jobs. The company training remains an indispensable talent smithy, but the gap between supply and demand is getting bigger.

Stable training numbers, but with reserved

In the commercial professions, the situation remains stable, with 1510 contracts concluded since October 2023 in the districts of Göttingen and Northeim. Christian Grascha describes this as a "gratifying, stable development", warns of exaggerated euphoria. The economic challenges in Germany already show their dark sides. In addition, 20 percent of the applicants decided to study or another school, while 8 percent found a job directly.

In the craft, on the other hand, there is positive news: 711 completed training contracts in the Göttingen agency district mean a plus of 39 compared to the previous year. Training positions in energy and climate-relevant professions are particularly in demand. Despite the challenges on the training market, there are also opportunities: "There have never been greater opportunities to do what you want," said Grascha.
