Price increases in Göttingen: Mensa dishes more expensive from November!

Göttingen. The price increases in the canteen of the student union at the University of Göttingen are finally here! From the coming week, students will have to shell out 30 cents for every court in the Central Mensa, Turmmensa and Lunchbox. This increase was officially confirmed by the public law Foundation and means the end of the popular "Lower Saxony menu" for only 2.50 euros.

"Unfortunately we cannot avoid price increases," explains Prof. Jörg Magull, Managing Director of the Studierendenwerk. While the students are now asked to checkout, employees and guests were spared this price increase for the time being. This is particularly noteworthy because the prices for non-students were raised in January 2023. In contrast, all guests hit the cafés of the Studierendenwerk: Here, the prices increase by a whopping ten percent!

Price increases everywhere!

The students had to take a deep breath so far, because the state of Lower Saxony had pumped millions into the students to keep prices stable. But this money pot is now empty! "We were able to relieve the students for 22 months, despite increasing energy costs and food prices," said Magull. Of the 4.8 million euros that flowed to Göttingen, 2.2 million went to campus catering and 2.4 million to cover energy costs in the dormitories.

But it will be even more expensive! From October, the dormitory rents will increase by up to 41.70 euros per month, and the semester fee will increase by 20 euros. In extreme cases, this means additional costs of up to 580 euros a year. The prices are increasing and the students have to prepare for a more expensive future!
