Three World War II bombs in Göttingen blow west city in turmoil!
Schützenplatz, 37073 Göttingen, Deutschland - Last Saturday afternoon, a significant operational effort was carried out in Göttingen to defuse blind passers. Three bombs from the Second World War detonated on the shooting range, which turned out to be not defused. The city administration announced that the blocking area was only released in the evening after the explosion.
The three bombs found weighed ten hundredweight and were particularly dangerous due to their proximity to each other. Fortunately, there were no people to harm the detonative explosion. However, the city reported damage to the roof of the neighboring rifle house. At 4:45 p.m. there were explosions that were heard throughout the city and were described as "very violent".
evacuation and security measures
Because of the planned explosion, almost 11,000 residents had to leave their apartments early in the morning. Furthermore, three explosive masters and two ammunition experts were on site. However, there were difficulties during the mission when some people were forbidden in the evacuation area. This led to 33 administrative offenses and two arrests by the police.
Train traffic was also affected by the measures: long -distance trains surrounded Göttingen, which led to light delays. Instead of the regional trains, rail replacement traffic was set up that brought passengers from and to the city.
innovative security measures
The sixth bomb clearance within five years was already the case for Göttingen. In order to minimize damage to the surrounding buildings, water -filled containers were set up around the suspicious areas. The city also built a “container castle” from nine Übersee-containers, which served as a security measure for the more orders. This structure allowed secure coordination of the entire deployment.
The city of Göttingen plans to avoid unnecessary evacuations through such preventive measures and to reduce the associated costs. This incident is an impressive example of the challenges in defusing historical explosives and the necessary safety precautions.
