School crisis in Gifhorn: SPD urgently demands new comprehensive school!

Gifhorn. The situation at the schools in the district of Gifhorn is tense, and the social democrats are now calling for clear answers from District Administrator Tobias Heilmann. The question of where the new high school students from Papenteich should be taught from August 2025 remains unsolved. Braunschweig has already terminated the school contract with Gifhorn, and concern is growing that Wolfsburg could also follow.

The children from Adenbüttel, Rötgesbüttel, my and other communities face a big mystery: Where are they taught after primary school? Over 800 students from the Brome community have to go to school outside of their home community, more than 500 of them in Wolfsburg. Peter Albrecht, the chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the Samtgemeinde Brome, warns: "The IGS Wittingen and the IGS Sassenburg are already at the limit, and the IGS Wittingen has no upper level!"

The demand for a fourth integrated comprehensive school (IGS) in the east of the district is getting louder. Albrecht emphasizes that the existing schools in Gifhorn would benefit from a new IGS in rusts. "The school routes for Bromer students would be much shorter and more direct," he explains. The velvet community is already investing more than 20 million euros in the new building of the secondary school and the renovation of the secondary school, which would make it easier to integrate the new IGS.

But the financial situation remains a big obstacle. While municipalities with IGS are fully relieved in district sponsorship, the Bromers have to finance their schools themselves. Albrecht announces: "We even have a lawsuit against the district that would no longer be necessary with a new IGS in rust." Time is pushing and the concerns of the parents grow while school policy in the Gifhorn district is on the brink.
