900 years of Varel: A play brings history back alive!
Varel, Deutschland - The city of Varel celebrates a very special event: 900 years of city history are brought to the stage with a dedicated play. The Low German stage Varel presents "People, Myths, Milestones", which will be performed in Tivoli from October 25 to November 29. This period not only includes the historical roots of the city, but also its current meaning. The piece is listed in High German and promises an impressive journey through the centuries.
The focus is on 21 actresses between the ages of 10 and 75, who represent significant personalities and moving fates of Varel in 14 episodes. These stories range from the time of the first settlers to current events and shed light on the challenges with which the citizens have faced over the centuries.historical diversity
The play begins in 1124 and finally ends with a big birthday party for the 900th anniversary of the city in 2024. Among the personalities shown, Varel's last chiefs, whose stories are illuminated as well as those of hall managers and the first female MPs in the Reichstag. The survivor of the last witch trial in Germany, Maria Rampendahl, is also recognized.
The historians and theater professionals Anna-Lena Rohde and Frank Fuhrmann, together with amateur actors, have worked hard to bring these episodes to life. They studied numerous history books and dealt intensively with local history. "The result is 14 episodes that offer many goosebumps moments," says Rohde.
But not only the acting performance will captivate the audience. To spice up the presentation, a video that produced videos for some scenes was hired. In particular, the representation of the Hansawerke requires creative approaches in which historical machines were even filmed through the city.
