Fight against vacancy: Diepholz relies on new ideas for the city center!

In Diepholz it is bubbling: the pedestrian zone, once a pulsating heart of the city, suffers from alarming vacancy! Despite an investment of over one million euros to upgrade the city center, the criticism remains loud. Mayor Florian Marré becomes a scapegoat for the unused shops - but reality is more complex and requires a rethink.

The problem of vacancy is not only an urban failure, but also depends on numerous factors. Owners who do not want to rent their real estate, and entrepreneurs who hesitate to gain a foothold in Diepholz are just a few of the challenges. "The decision lies with the entrepreneur," explains Marré. Customers' purchasing power is crucial, and the city can only act as a partner here, not as a decision -maker. The mayor emphasizes that the city administration cannot simply “play Monopoly” when it comes to acquiring buildings. Only the old town hall belongs to the city - the rest remains in private hand.

The city relies on new framework conditions

instead of using the purchase of real estate, Diepholz pursues a different strategy: the creation of favorable framework conditions for traders. New shops are to be attracted with specific funding opportunities. Economic development and city marketing (Wista) mbH plays a key role in helping potential tenants in finding suitable rooms and even providing financial support. Up to 18,000 euros in rental allowance are possible to promote the settlement of new business.

But the challenges should not be underestimated. The city has no direct motorway connection and suffers from demographic disadvantages that deter potential chains. Despite all efforts, the success in the settlement of new business is missing. It is a tedious way that requires patience and determination. Marré and his team do everything they can to focus on the positive developments and motivate people to do more for their city. "We need positive stories - and like to have a few more of them," the mayor calls for a joint effort.
