In a moving act of commemoration, numerous soldiers, representatives of the city administration, fire brigade and local clubs gathered at the memorial "Am Heldenhain" in Diepholz to commit the Memorial Day. In his speech, Colonel Volker Benz, commander of the weapons system support center 2, emphasized the importance of memory for peace and reconciliation. "The common commemoration is an indispensable step on the way to mutual respect," he explained.
Benz recalled the decisive events of the Second World War, in particular the landing of the Allies in Normandy and Warsaw Uprising in 1944. These moments symbolically stand for the courage and determination that are necessary in dark times. "We not only have to look at the past from a German perspective, but also take into account the memories of our European partners," he warned. The Colonel underlined that the teachings from history should encourage us not to repeat the mistakes of the ancestors.
an appeal for the future
