Books that shaped our lives: photo show in the Syker library
In the Syke city library, a remarkable exhibition will soon be opened, which not only celebrates the love of reading, but also offers personal insights into the stories behind the favorite books of fellow citizens. The exhibition, which opens its goals on October 8, is from Carsten-W. Müller, an enthusiastic photographer and professor of transport. As part of his initiative "My Favorite Book", Müller had invited 38 people in the library to be photographed with her favorite book and to tell her personal stories beforehand.
The impetus for this special campaign came seven years ago when Müller first asked people to be photographed with books that were important to them. For this year's new edition, he took four days to photograph the participants in the library reading chair and hear their stories. "It was so valuable for me, I was able to look into the childhood of people in front of the camera," enthuses Müller.
books that touch
The participants brought a large number of books that not only elevated memories, but in some cases were even formative for their own life. Müller offered every participant the opportunity to read from their book, while he recorded these moments in film with an analogy camera over 110 years old - the Nettel Deckrullo. The first results of these recordings are impressive and are part of the exhibition in the entrance area of the city library as large black and white photos.
In order to visually capture these personal stories, Müller used a modern digital camera for the actual “my favorite book” photos, with which the portrayed in various poses are depicted together with their favorite books. While one person is relaxed in a reading chair, another emphasizes their upright posture. "Everyone stages differently," says Müller and is pleased with the variety of representations.
In addition to the pictures, an information sheet is provided for each portrait, which explains the motives of the photographed as to why this book has a special meaning for them. This personal connection between the readers and their books will enrich the exhibition and encourage visitors to think about their own favorite books.
The support association of the city library not only supports the exhibition financially, but could also benefit itself. The photographs have the opportunity to acquire their portraits and the proceeds will benefit the association. At the same time, the city library is pursuing the goal of inspiring people to read and focusing on the importance of books.
The exhibition not only promises honest insights into the reading experiences of the people in Syke, but also a strengthening of reading culture in the community. Visitors can admire the works created from next Tuesday, while the ceremonial opening takes place at 6.30 p.m.
