Future visions: Husum port as the engine of the energy transition!
The Kiel Ministry of Economic Affairs has confirmed investments of over 2.2 million euros for the repair of the Husum harbor in 2024. The largest posts of investments include the renewal of the bank wall in the port area and the purchase of a new emergency generator for the barrier. For the year 2025, a further 2.3 million euros are planned for the port area to further improve the infrastructure, such as NDR reported.
The regional ports Husum and Büsum could play an important role in the traffic and energy transition in Schleswig-Holstein. According to a study by the Hanseatic Transport Consultancy, which was carried out on behalf of the IHK Flensburg and the western coast municipalities, both ports have potential that needs to be used. Husum and Büsum rank 7 and 10 of the largest seaports in Schleswig-Holstein, whereby they have to assert themselves against larger competitors such as Lübeck, Puttgarden, Kiel and the offshore ports Cuxhaven and Esbjerg href = "https://www.shz.de/startsite-hh/artikel/haefen-in-und-buesum-koennen-energende-in-sh-beshen-44210135" Class = "Source_2"> Shz reported.
challenges and opportunities
The three large ferry ports and offshore ports represent considerable competition. Currently over 1,000 employees are working directly in port -dependent companies in the western coast ports, while a total of around 2,500 places are connected to the Husum and Büsum. A major problem for the two ports is the lack of access to active rail connections that have not been used since the 1990s. In addition, the infrastructure, including water depths, kai areas and streets, must be significantly improved in order to maintain competitiveness and to secure jobs.
Both ports offer decisive opportunities in the energy sector, especially with regard to services for offshore wind farms and the production of green hydrogen. A record handling was recorded in Büsum in 2021, while Husum has a declining trend, especially in the area of feed and fertilizers. The reasons for these declines include the access of access and inadequate depth. The port of Husum needs a water depth of at least 4.70 meters to meet the requirements and to cope with the kaian systems higher traffic loads.
crab fishing also plays an important role in both ports, especially in Büsum. There, every third crab is sorted or processed in the North Sea. In perspective, 150 to 200 new jobs in Büsum and 100 to 120 in Husum could be created through settlements in the field of green technologies.
