Storm risk: British aircraft carrier fights in front of Cuxhaven!

Cuxhaven, Deutschland - storm surge, thunderstorms and snow showers - the North Sea shows itself from its rough side! In front of the Lower Saxony coast near Cuxhaven, the British aircraft carrier HMS “Queen Elizabeth” fought with the extreme weather conditions on Monday morning. On the way to Hamburg, the impressive 284 -meter -long ship was supposed to put on the cruise terminal in Steinwerder in the morning, but nature had other plans.

The port management Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) reported that the aircraft carrier was significantly delayed due to the strong winds. The arrival was expected for the Monday afternoon, while the North Sea island of Norderney already had the first damage from the violent winds. Dunes were flooded and the seafaring stalled. The "Queen Elizabeth" needed extensive preparations for the passage across the Elbe, since its massive format takes up a lot of space in the fairway and you are not allowed to meet larger ships.

late arrival in Hamburg

On Monday afternoon, the time had finally come: The "Queen Elizabeth" reached the port of Hamburg with several hours late, accompanied by tugs, which brought the majestic ship safely to its place on the cruise terminal. Spectators held the spectacle with their cell phone cameras while the Royal Navy in Hamburg gave a rare guest appearance. The last visit to a British aircraft carrier in the Hanseatic city was 13 years ago when the "Ark Royal" set up there. The "Queen Elizabeth" will linger in Hamburg for a week and take part in a NATO exercise-an event that enriches the maritime history of the Region.
