Luminous grenade discovered on Wernke site: construction work stopped!
In a dramatic incident on the site of the Wernke slaughterhouse in Cloppenburg, a dangerous light grenade was discovered during construction work! The police and the ordnance disposal service were immediately on hand when the construction workers brought the explosive relic from the Second World War. The explosive master Michael Crölle reported that it was a 25-pound luminance grenade, which, however, no longer has any explosive power because it has already performed its task in the war.
But be careful! Despite its harmlessness, the grenade for laypersons can look like a dud, which increases its danger. "There is black powder in the grenade, which was used to open the parachutes," said Crölle. In order to avoid any risks, the ammunition scrap is initially stored safely in the bunker and later brought to Munster for disposal. The quick reaction of the construction workers who immediately alerted the police prevented worse.
Current construction projects at the slaughterhouse
The company Josef Wernke, a traditional battle and dismantling, was founded in 1970 and has been part of the Spehe Group since 2005. The recent incidents also make a highlight of the challenges that can appear even during everyday construction work. A clear indication that the past sometimes revives in unexpected places!
