Memmingen: On the way to the bicycle -friendly municipality until 2025!
In the Bavarian city of Memmingen, bicycle friendliness is very important. As a “bicycle -friendly municipality”, the city has set itself ambitious goals in order to significantly increase the proportion of cycling by 2025. This is done in the context of a continuous process that is intended to adapt the mobility of citizens and promote environmentally friendly transport.
At the recent meeting of the Committee on Public Order, public transport and traffic, Urs Keil, the head of the municipal civil engineering office, was asked how high the current bicycle traffic in Memmingen is. His explanations provide important insights into the fact that bicycle traffic is not only an option, but also a priority for the city administration.
Current developments in cycling
The city of Memmingen has developed clear strategies to make cycling more attractive. This includes the construction of new bicycle paths, the improvement of the infrastructure and the creation of secure storage options for bicycles. An aspect that is particularly taken into account when planning is the safety of cyclists to avoid accidents and to guarantee a positive experience in cycling.
The review of the current status of the cycling share is considered a measure to document progress and, if necessary, adjust the strategy. The aim is to significantly increase the proportion of those who rise on the bike every day.
The necessary awareness of the citizens also plays a central role. Campaigns for promoting cycling and events to clarify the advantages of bicycle traffic should strengthen awareness and motivate more people to pedal. Statistics have shown an upward trend in recent years- the Bavarian Aerospace Center has already received initial positive feedback.
It remains exciting to see how the planned measures take effect and what influence they will have on the cycle traffic share in Memmingen, especially with regard to social mobility. The city faces the challenge of achieving the goals set in the coming years and thus making a contribution to more sustainability and less traffic density in the streets.
