500 years of freedom: Memmingen celebrates the twelve articles with a large exhibition!

Memmingen, Deutschland - A spectacular event is imminent! In 2025, the city of Memmingen became the stage for the Bayern exhibition "Memmingen 1525" from March 16 to October 19. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the "twelve articles", the history of these revolutionary demands for freedom and human rights comes alive. Mayor Jan Rothenbacher emphasizes the topicality of these topics: "The demand for fundamental freedom and human rights is still very topical today."

The exhibition will take place in the Dietrich Bonhoeffer House and offers visitors a captivating journey into the past of the early 16th century. Dr. Rainhard Riepertinger, deputy director of the Bavarian History House, emphasizes that the Peasant War of 1525 was an epochal event that originated in Memmingen. "The twelve articles were known in almost all uprising regions and are a core location of the events 500 years ago," he explains. The "twelve articles" themselves, which the farmers described as the "bestseller" of their time, demanded nothing less than freedom, which was a revolutionary idea at the time.

an extensive supporting program

Memmingen plans an exciting campaign and event program to properly commemorate the 500-year commemoration. On March 7, 2025, the start will be a multimedia staging at the Kramer guild, the historical place of the farmers' assembly. From March 14th to 16th, a lay theater game will come to the premiere, followed by a summer full of music, cinema and family programs. A highlight will be the theater and circus spectacle "Uffrur! ... on the road" on July 11, 2025.

The crowning glory of the festival year will be the awarding of the Memmingen Freedom Prize in 1525 on October 3, 2025, accompanied by a large city festival. The city of Memmingen and the Swabian district invite everyone to work on this day to secure our free basic values. A program full of concerts, markets and hands -on offers will bring the citizens together and celebrate the importance of freedom.
