Mayor in the storm step: Wind turbines threaten Steinhagen's monument!

Steinhagen. In the heart of Steinhagen it sinks off! The municipality has been in the renovation of its listed school since 2019 - over eight million euros have already flowed. But in the middle of the final sprint comes the shocking message: A new spatial planning program wants to show 155 new areas for wind power plants in the Vorpommern region, including a freshly renovated school directly within sight of the freshly renovated school! A storm of indignation brews.

"And suddenly a monument is not so important?" asks an outraged mayor Hansjörn Butkereit (independent). "We protected the monument and invest a lot of money, and now wind turbines are to be built right outside the door!" His words throw a bright light on the double standards of planning: While the preservation of the historical school was priority, the wind industry interests now seem to be primarily.

Wind farm opponents form

The construction committee chairman Michael Masson-Wawer hits the same notch: "Obviously, you reach for every possible area." With 26 hectares, the planned zone for wind turbines is smaller than the legally prescribed minimum area of 35 hectares, which only reinforces the excitement. Wind farm opponents bundle their powers, network from Steinhagen to Richenberg and fight against the flood of wind turbines - "You can't pour everything here!"

Until November 8th, the community has time to submit statements. Mayor Butkereit warns of the ecological consequences and refers to the protected species in the area: Schreiadler and white storks. The decision, which shapes the future of the school and the region, is in the stars. A cultural struggle for the monument has started!
